Exceptional Outcomes in Breast Reconstruction Surgery
Our commitment to excellence in microsurgical breast reconstruction is evident in the outstanding results achieved in both our private and NHS practices.
Outstanding success rates
In the private sector, with two consultant surgeons operating together, we have achieved zero flap losses across 225 consecutive reconstructions from 2020 to 2024. This reflects the meticulous planning and teamwork of our experienced surgeons.
In the NHS, where one of our consultants collaborates with a senior trainee, the flap loss rate remains exceptionally low at 0.5% from over 3,500 reconstructions.
This is much lower than the national average 2.4% published from the National Free Flap Registry.
Focus on minor complications
With such low rates of flap failure, our attention shifts to managing minor complications, classified using the Modified Clavien-Dindo system. While minor complications can occur, they are usually resolved within 3–4 weeks, ensuring long-term patient satisfaction.
Length of stay and recovery
Our Enhanced Recovery Pathway enables rapid recovery and discharge.
- 5% of private patients are discharged on Day 1.
- 65% of private patients are discharged within 2 days.
- The mean length of stay for private patients is just 2.4 days.
Importantly, no patient discharged within 48 hours has experienced a loss of their reconstruction.

Emergency return to theatre rates
Our private practice demonstrates a low emergency return to theatre rate of 1.5%. Comparatively, the NHS rate for 2023 was 4.5%. These figures highlight the benefits of specialised, consultant-led care in a private setting.

Impact of hospital stay
We have observed that minor complication rates double with longer hospital stays. By prioritising early mobilisation and discharge, we not only enhance patient comfort but also minimise potential complications.
This exceptional track record reflects our dedication to providing safe, effective, and patient-focused care. If you have any questions or wish to discuss your options, we are here to help you every step of the way.

Free flap vs implant reconstruction
Why are we so passionate about free flap microsurgical breast reconstruction over implant-based?
One reason are the infection, readmission and reoperation rates for implant surgey. See more of the data by clicking the button below.
